The Floating Salon
A unique
hairdressing experience
on the water

The Floating Salon is a fully functioning hair salon based onboard my beautiful boat Blackjack. Blackjack is a wide beam canal boat. At 12ft wide, almost twice the width of an average canal boat she is extremely sturdy and does not rock or bounce when you walk around her.
The whole boat including The Floating Salon runs 'off grid' and is completely self sustaining. We have solar panels on the roof to generate our electricity which is stored in a battery bank and we carry our own water and diesel supply. In the winter to keep warm, we burn wood collected and donated to us throughout the year. When the sun doesn't shine we run our engine for a few hours which has multiple benefits. Firstly it charges our battery bank and the by-product of running the engine is hot water which we harness to use in The Floating Salon. Then of course propulsion which is important when we need to fill up our water tank from various water supplies along the waterways.
My name is Nicola and I have been hairdressing for over 15 years, two of which were spent working in London's West End salons. For four years I ran my own freelance business where I travelled to clients houses. I am fully qualified and insured and I am a member of the Freelance Hair and Beauty Federation.
In September 2006 we bought Blackjack as a project. She was an empty shell and she was to become our home for the next few years. We spent a year and a half making her habitable and in the summer of 2008 in Bath, on the Kennet and Avon canal The Floating Salon opened it's doors for the first time. By launching the first ever hair salon of this kind I have created a totally different kind of hairdressing experience for land lovers and boaters alike. The Floating Salon is the only hair salon on the Inland Waterways system but you can rest assured that you will get the same service as you would expect in any high street salon. With the added bonus of relaxing on board a beautiful boat watching the world go by at the slow pace that goes hand in hand with canal life.
The Floating Salon was chosen to take part in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Thames Flotilla in June 2012. We were one of only 40 canal boats throughout the country to be selected. Book an appointment today and say you have been on board one of the chosen few!!

Upon arrival you will receive a warm welcome and throughout your appointment you will be offered complimentary refreshments and a head massage with every wash. Whether it's a quick trim, a colour or a full restyle you are after please contact Nicola more for information and appointments.
